Blue Abyss

posted 12 Nov 2018, 13:22 by Anna Rust

We started the half term with a firework themed day. We learned about the history of Bonfire Night and then talked about staying safe around fireworks. We made posters and comic strips to help others to also know how to stay safe. In the afternoon, we applied our learning of expanded noun phrases to a piece of writing. To finish off the day, we worked in year group teams to collect natural objects from the playground and field and to arrange the resources to create giant firework master pieces.

Last Tuesday, we had a themed day to introduce our new topic, Blue Abyss. We each made an aquarium in a shoebox. We thought carefully about what resources would be appropriate for each part of the aquarium. Some children chose to make objects using salt sough whilst others created plants using felt. We also experimented with making parts of our aquariums move. Our aquariums will be used as a setting for story writing.

Last week we also began to locate countries and oceans using atlases and we practised sketching skills. We will continue with both of these throughout the topic.

On Friday we had a day to celebrate the 100th anniversary of WW1. We briefly learned about the history of the war and then worked in groups to complete a project. The tasks included writing a prayer, thinking about what we are thankful for, independent research and using related vocabulary to create a word cloud. In the morning we also had a service at the memorial in the village and in the afternoon, we sketched images of the memorial with the wreath laid by children in Year 6.

This week we are focusing on using conjunctions in our writing and using our research of a sea creature to write a fact file. We have started learning about Roman numerals up to 100and we will also be solving word problems linked to addition and subtraction.
