Trip to the Recycling Centre

posted 10 Oct 2018, 08:58 by Anna Rust
This morning, Cedars went to the recycling centre in MK. The first thing the children were told was that they are allowed to pick up items, touch and play with things - the excitement this caused! We spent a bit of time exploring the education room which was full of recycled and up-cycled items. Next we learnt lots of facts about recycling and then we went inside the factory. Unfortunately , the machinery had broken down and had stopped working but we put on all of the safety gear nevertheless - hard hats, hi-viz jackets, ear defenders, gloves, the lot! We saw piles and piles of rubbish waiting to be recycled. After that, we split into three groups to complete recycling related activities. The first one was to be pretend factory workers and sort the rubbish that is tipped onto a conveyor belt. The second activity was to find a list of objects around the room and name the material they are made from. The final activity was to solve clues to find the right items to place in a supermarket trolley. For the last part of our visit, we crushed fizzy drink cans in a special machine. W e then went by coach back to school. The children will now complete tasks in school linked to the visit. We will be writing recounts and formal letters to thank the volunteers who came with us. We will also be continuing to learn about rubbish and recycling in PHSE.
