A Child's War

This half term, Maples will be learning all about World War II from the perspective of children who lived through the war.  We will be looking at what it was like to be evacuated, how the children felt about being removed from their families and how they felt in their new homes.  We will also be considering how rationing affected daily life as well as looking at the life of Anne Frank and the holocaust.

We started our topic off with a day where the children were able to make their own gas mask boxes from scratch.  This involved them measuring and drawing out the net for the box, colouring and cutting it out and then constructing it, together with the instructions for storing the gas mask. They also thought about the design of the Spitfire aeroplane and looked at a map of the world and worked out who was or was not involved in World War II.

The children are really engaged with this topic and we look forward to them learning lots about the subject.
